Agents of MAGIC – Hogwarts Year 5: Endings and Beginnings 6.21

Tommy year 6 avie1Tom’s eyes narrowed on Markus Deadwood and Peter Porsblat both stood in front of him with their wands pointed squarely at him. With a sneer on his face, Markus flourished his wand, “Crucio!”

At the same time Peter’s wand whipped through the air, “Inflamare!” A jet of flame shot through the air toward Tom.

Without even thinking, Tom dove toward the ground, the Crucio missed his head by a half inch. Tom jabbed his wand toward the oncoming flame, “Aguamenti!” A powerful jet of water met the flame from Peter’s wand dousing it.

It was the second time an unforgivable curse had been uttered, leaving Rose to wonder exactly how much of their will a supposedly imperiused person retained...

Rose year 6 avie1“Whaur is he?” The back of his fist covered his mouth as Orlando let loose a string of hacking coughs, soot tickling his throat and lungs. “Whaur did he gae?” The thought of Eric, of all that he had done to them all year long. That rational thought started slipping through his fingers like dry sand in his fists. He wanted to scream and it came out in a litany of Scottish curses. “-rybumshite!”

Water and soot streaking her face, her curls matted to her head, Rose pushed away from her housemate with the strength of someone far larger. She stared at the rough rock face, willing the cave entrance to return. “Where is he?” Coughing, she searched the faces around her. She didn’t want to open her mouth. She knew how it would sound. But it came out anyway, “you didn’t just leave him in there?”

Danny year 6 avie1Tommy was finding the waiting nearly unbearable. It seemed like ages since he had heard from either of the other two. “That’s it,” Tom’s wand tapped against his leg, “I’m going on my own!”

“Oi!” The massive wooden doors flung open with such force that it must have strained the hinges. Orlando was running full tilt and not a bit out of breath as he rushed across the slate rock and down the steps to the grass where Tommy had just lost patience with waiting. “Whaur’s Danny?” Even as he asked he was rubbing that knut with his thumb. “What dae ye think happ-” He was cut short as a black spot in the early evening sky rocketed down toward them. It was Danny. Foozle gave a jerk of his head to turn Tom’s attention to their Man in Ravenclaw.

Danny skidded to a halt near the others...

Orlando year 6 avie1Tom took the knut out of his ear and rubbed it a second time, “Lando, have you heard from Céilidh? Danny and I can’t get a hold of her and Rose is missing too.”

Foozle opened one eye. It was filled with the flickering flames of the Hufflepuff common room hearth. “Nae,” he mumbled reaffixing the knut in his ear. The Hufflepuff’s mood had grown considerably more grumpy since Nicolette’s forced departure. Everybody assumed it was the culmination of his forced exile. Danny was the only one who knew better.

“Ah’v naither seen nor haurd a peep o Ginger since…” his wheels ground a little, the slow burn of concern clearing out the cobwebs, “oor Magical Beasties OWL…”

“What was that, MacFoozle?” The voice of Melissa Upton rolled over back of the couch Orlando was laying on.

“Ahmno talkin tae ye, U...

Danny year 6 avie1Tom could barely concentrate through his Arithmancy O.W.L. He kept staring between the doors and the empty seat next to him where Rose should have been. Near the end of the test his quill raced across the paper trying to fill in the answers as fast as it could. Finally finishing, Tom practically ran up to the sourpussed old wizard and then back out the doors, as he did so he shoved the knut in his ear, “Danny, you there?”

Danny was lying on his bed with Cassidy watching him from across the room and sixth year prefect Sebastian Payne stationed on the stairway outside the room. He felt the knut buzz, and slipped it from his pocket, pulling a blanket over his head and sliding the knut into his pillow-side ear. “Ah’m here,” he whispered. “But nae able tae dae much. Bein’ watched like a hawk.”

Rose year 6 avie1“Belle?” He had to be wrong somehow. It couldn’t be her, not after all that had happened this year. Rose was suddenly gripping his hand much tighter than he was hers. “We’ve got to go faster.” The tiny Ravenclaw blinked away her own tears, trying to tune out the small voice that said she really didn’t know anyone anymore.

“Danny and Orlando aren’t innocents…” He bounded down the steps and hit the grass without missing a step, “I’m sorry.” He looked over a bit, catching her eye, watching her. “I’ve seen the things that they’ve done, overheard them talking…” His eyes fell to the grass underfoot. His voice got quiet. “It’s amazing what you learn when nobody notices you…”

A single tear ran down her cheek. She couldn’t say I’m sorry. Words alone weren’t enough. “I’m here with you now...

Céilidh year 6 avie1The interior of the cave was cool and damp, the nature of caves being what they are. Céilidh pushed aside the curtain they’d strung across the opening and stepped down into their own private common room.

“Lumos,” she cast into the empty air. One by one, the sconces that ringed the cave flared to life. She pointed her wand at the blackened pit that was sunken into the curved wall, “Incendio.” A tiny fireball shot from the end of her wand to land in the never-consumed pile of wood that sat in the pit. Small tongues of flame licked up, quickly growing into a cheery crackling fire that banished the damp chill from the air.

Céilidh flopped down on the decrepit sofa, earning herself a cloud of dust in reward. She pulled the list from her pocket and looked it over...

Rose year 6 avie1“The conflicts of two are doubled in four; they’re predictable but stubborn.” Tiny foot tapping to a rhythm only she could hear, Rose stared up at the ceiling, oblivious to everything in the room around her as she did her last minute review. “Five: instability and imbalance. Six: harmony and family life. Seven: perceptive, understanding, and bright.”

She let out a long breath, blowing an errant curl away from her face. “If only I was more sevenish…” The blonde resisted the urge to chew on her hair… for the moment. “Eight: the most unpredictable. Nine: completion and fulfillment to the fullest degree.”

The door to the small little nook of a room flung wide, racking against the wall with enough force to nearly break the window. It was almost a miracle the door remained on its metal hinges...

Céilidh year 6 avie1“Thank God this bloody week is almost over,” Tom said with a sigh as he and Céilidh walked through the halls, “Just Arithmancy to go and I’m done.”

Céilidh slipped her arm around his waist as they walked. “Aye. A’m fen tae be throu masel.” They threaded their way through the students milling between classes. Most of the fifth- and seventh-years they encountered had the same worn down look about them having spent the majority of the past week taking major exams. They stopped outside the Great Hall, taking the opportunity to linger together for a moment before Tom went in.

“So what are you going to do while I’m in here?” Tom said as he looked into the Great Hall.

“A’m gaun’ae gae tae tha cave,” she replied. “See at A can find onything we micht hae missed...

Nicolette year 6 avie1Danny finished his Charms test with a flourish of his quill. He tossed the feathery writing instrument into the air and caught it on the tip of his wand as it fell. Balancing it there, he picked up the scroll and walked to the front of the hall, where Professor Flitwick overlooked the assembled students who were toiling away at the written portion of their OWLs.

“That was fast, Daniel. Are you sure you don’t want to recheck your answers?” the diminutive professor asked in a soft voice, knowing what the answer would be.

As expected, Danny grinned at his head of house. “Nae, sir. Ah’m shuir A cannae improve upon it. Ah’ve hid naethin tae dae but study of late.”

The corner of Professor Flitwick’s mouth twitched upward at this statement, but he tried to keep his amusement hidden...
