Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.80

fovatarFox managed to haul Kardiac’s water logged body back to his bike. ‘A little superhuman strength would be nice right now.’ A bit of smelling salts and Eddy was awake enough to at least hang onto her as she rode the bike back to her building. She had toyed with using some of those plastic zip ties to tie him to her… Getting him up to her apartment was an entirely different matter, exhausting her. ‘Where’s Wolf when you actually need him?”

She set about changing him and getting him into bed, worried he was going to catch his death. She was fairly soaked too from him leaning on her, so she was quite relieved to change into dry clothing as well. Once he was safe in bed, she went about hiding all the ‘evidence’, including the tiny camera...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.79

Simeon wrapped the bandages tightly around his hands and smiled at the briefcase. The money made the pain almost worthwhile. He would have to learn to be more careful in the future though. It wouldn’t do to damage Brian too severely.

Damn straight! The strength of the thought caught him off guard. It plowed through his mind. It made his forehead itch. What he really needed, he decided, was rest. Time to put the body to bed. He’d decide what to do about the designer drug tomorrow. Set up a lab and start making it himself or sell the formula to the highest bidder? Maybe give it back to the people he’d taken it from and make some friends for having rescued their work from the fire. That one suit had said they never forgot their friends.

From the brief glance he’d gotten of the warehouse facil...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.78

kavatarKardiac was shocked awake when he hit the cold harbor. He hoped to Heaven he wasn’t in shock… but he knew his part and had to play it. His chest hurt like he couldn’t believe, his entire body ached from being thrown so far, and he was pretty certain his heart wasn’t doing too well either. Then there was that whole inability to move thing.

Still, he had a job to do. He focused his energy into the most spectacular light show he could manage, and hoped it was impressive above water as it was under. After a moment, he threw out everything he had, and then pulled it back with all his strength. The resulting implosion sent shockwaves through the water that nearly toppled boats. The rushing water sent him spiralling downward into the darkness.

No problem, he thought with a grimace. Just stabilize...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.77

bwvatarIt had been an interminably long day for Aaron. And with the events planned for the evening, it wasn’t going to get much better. A quick meeting with Jenna early in the day for information exchange and then it was business as usual. Unfortunately his thoughts kept drifting to the performance they had to give later. Aaron knew Kardiac was already nursing a few cracked ribs, but he wouldn’t be able to pull too many punches and still look convincing. Leaving the office early, he headed back to his brownstone to try and relax a little.

Not five minutes after he walked through the door, the phone rang, “Hello…”

“Hey dear,” Kaye’s voice came as a pleasant surprise.

“HEY! How are you? What’s going on? Everything okay?” Aaron’s voice was a mixture of elation and concern...

capvatar“That’s fair. Catch you later… ‘Capin’.” Without another word, the green-clad warrior dropped over the edge of the roof. The caped Capin just sort of nodded to himself, not going over to see how Kardiac landed or where he was headed. His new friend was more than capable, and he had other things to attend to.

“But since we’re in this neck of the woods,” he walked over to the opposite side of the building, looking out over the the rooftops that stretched into Garrison. “Might as well pay some visits to some of the locals.” He took off, jumping from one roof to the next, heading south into the Commercial District.

The city was home to all sorts. Crime had all the facets of an uncut diamond, from the lowest mugger to the Don himself. Middle men ran between the levels...

kavatarKardiac watched Fox depart, then moved quietly around the corner of the building. He had wanted to tell her that earlier, but he’d been afraid she would think it was just some automatic response… telling her what she wanted to hear. She was too important to him to even suggest that.

Once he was sure there were no guards within line of sight, he pulled out a small, wolf-head shaped communicator. He spoke in a loud whisper. “I hope you can hear this damned thing.”

“I read you,” Bluewolf’s voice replied.

“Good,” the vigilante replied quietly. “I’m about to enter the conference room. I’ll tap twice when everyone is in position.”

“I’m already on the roof. Ready to receive.”

Kardiac clicked off the comm, then clicked it on again quickly...

fovatarKardiac decided to do things a little differently this time. He stopped his bike in its normal ‘hiding place,’ changed its paint back to black, did a little quick change of his own, and drove around to park in the building’s lot. He then walked into the building, pack slung over his back, and took the elevator to Vivian’s floor. Once he arrived, he did things the old fashioned way and rang the doorbell.

Vivian had spent so long going over the plans to the Yacht Yards that day she could see the layout in her mind when she closed her eyes. She had already decided to take a break, to put on a second pot of coffee when the doorbell rang. A brow raised, ‘Who could that be?’ Her only visitors these days arrived via the balcony...

Garrison City Police Department, 8th Precinct
Second Floor Meeting Room

“Sit down and shut up, Fostern,” said Commissioner Patrick R. Troy. Andy said and did nothing as Fostern choked down his protests and accusations. “You’re lucky I’m not in here with a filleting knife ready to give your miserable hide to the families of three good police officers.”

The Commissioner turned to Captain Castillo, Angela and Andy. The three sat at one end of the table. The detectives flanked their captain. As always, Castillo was as readable as a granite statue.

“But, Sir,” sputtered Fostern.

“But nothing, Fostern,” said the Commissioner. He threw down a series of files. “Those men are alive only because Pope and Sheldahl told the ER team at the medical center what kind of chemical burns to expect...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.72

Arthur Schultz was looking forward to getting home. Today had been a long one, taxing, and it was much too late to be at the office. Still, he had gotten a lot accomplished, and it was better than sitting home trying to have a conversation with his wife.

He reconsidered going home, briefly. There was somewhere else he could go… a certain young lady he had on the strings… of course, his wife probably already assumed that’s where he was. He was, after all, ‘working late.’ Arthur decided to take the long way home.

As he was walking to his office door, he heard what he thought to be sounds of a scuffle in the hallway. Assuming that the tuxedoed nutcase had returned, he edged forward and pressed his ear against the door. Nothing… silence.

Then pain as the door blew off of its hinges...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.71

kavatarKardiac pushed himself up to his feet just in time to watch his perp fall to the ground. He had noticed his rescuer, but he was still in ‘pursuit mode,’ and his tunnel vision was on overdrive. When he was certain that the dealer wasn’t getting back to his feet, he turned back to his rescuer.

The man was in a tuxedo, cowl, and cape. He could only be one person… only Kardiac still wasn’t sure who that man was. He was just a series of unconfirmed rumors after all… sort of like himself. “Thanks,” he said with a half-smile. “I’ve never been a big fan of public transportation.”

The tuxedoed man smiled and shrugged, nodding toward the wrecked Buick. “Private cars don’t exactly seem to be your forté either...
