The phone was ringing as Corin stepped out of the shower. He wrapped a towel around himself carefully so as not to disturb the gigantic bruise on his left side from the night before. He had checked it out as best he could, and wasn’t completely sure that he hadn’t broken anything, but he decided he would sneak into x-ray later that day, and check it out for himself.
“Hello dear boy,” the familiar voice of his uncle was on the other end, “I was wondering if you have seen this morning’s paper yet?”
“Not yet.”He sat down on the edge of the bed and winced at the pain in his ribs.”I just got up.”
“Oh, well, there is a great article about the reopening of the Egyptian wing and a special showing of the artifacts your parents discovered.”Corin rolled his eyes, he had always thought that his uncle had used his parents as his meal ticket, Plus, we are having a gala event this Sunday to premiere the restored exhibits, and I want you to come.”
“I don’t know sir, I’ve always felt uncomfortable in settings like that, and…
“Listen Young man,” his uncle interrupted, “Not only is this the grand reopening of the exhibit, but we are honoring your parents. You should be there for their memory.”
Corin knew when his uncle used that tone he meant business, and he was not in the mood to argue.”Fine,” he sighed as he gave in, “What time should I be there.”
“Around six, and thank you my boy, thank you.”The joy was evident in his uncle’s voice.
“Don’t mention it.” He said as his eyes rolled again.
“Oh and by the way, you might want to bring an escort for the evening, good day my boy.” The line clicked dead before he could reply. He always did that. He cursed under his breath, and began to dress for work.
“Whew.” Corin sighed to himself as he looked at his x-rays. Nothing was broken so it was just a bruise. He took the x-ray, and put it up in his locker in the break room. He then went to the main reception area to check incoming cases. It was the first slow day since the beginning of the gang war. Well that’s one worry down, he thought to himself, Now I’ve got that damn party to worry about.
“Boy Corr,” Jamie said as she appeared at his side, you missed a great time last night. How was the artifact tagging this morning.”
“Ah you know my uncle,” He said as he tried his best to lie so that she wouldn’t notice, “Everything has to be perfect.”
“Yep, so I read that there’s gonna be some kinda exhibit that your folks found?”
“Yeah, they’re gonna have some grand reopening on Sunday for the Egyptian wing and my presence is requested,” as he said this, the worlds of his uncle ran through his head, “Hey, how would you like me to pay you back for last night?”
“Oh really,” she turned and looked him right in the eye, “and how’s that?”
“Well it all depends on how you look in a black dress.”
