Another wave of silence filled the connection as both of them avoided the other subject. Just as much as she was waiting for him to bring it up, he was avoiding it. Silhouette broke in first. “Did you find him?”
Capin looked at the glass in the light and then drained it. “Yeah we did,” he replied. That was all he had.
“We’ll let you know if we find anything.”
“Same here. Thanks, Jenna.”
“Always.” With that last word they closed the connection.
Scott arched his eyebrow as he listened to the conversation. “Interesting. You didn’t tell them what you discovered…”
“Get out of my head, Scott…you lost that right a while ago.”
A look of regret flashed over his face. “Sorry. Old habits die hard.” He leaned against the console. “What’s this situation?”
Jenna gave him a long look of annoyance that ended with a sigh. Her fingers danced across the keyboard as she explained, “Trust. One of their members, Midnight Man, has been removed from play by… well… a dead guy who doesn’t want to be dead.”
Scott frowned. “That doesn’t sound good.”
She shook her head. “The Trust has been running for nearly 48 hours. I’m not sure either side is ready for some of the stuff I could pull from here, but they need back up.” Her eyes stayed on the computer screen as she pulled up any and all data on Corin, the dig, Ak-Fet Sur, Spiritual transference and the ilk. She began running probability scans for likeliest places for Ak-Fet to have taken Corin. “I hate possession. I really do. Wonder how long it would take for Arkana to fly down… ”
An alarm began sounding in the base.
“What the…” Jenna picked up the nearby headset, barking “Agent Fairchild. Report status.” Her face darkened as the information about the blackout and the bombs came over her comm.
“They’ll be heading right for them…” Her usual sharp tone cracked a little as she keyed to Capin.
I know. His voice was quiet.
The usual. The dapper detective tried to force cheerfulness into his voice.
“Back up?” She tried to hide her worry.
What you can send…
“Done.” Jenna switched the comm off and turned, barking into her headset. “I need a squad… what do you mean we’re short staffed… I understand there’s… but…” She growled in frustration.
Scott put a quiet hand on her arm. “What can I help with Jen…”
Jenna ranted at the comm unit, “I understand the alert… I do… and with forces compromised thanks to the Bug problem… and the riots…”
Scott stopped her. “What can I do to help, Jen… I brought the suit.” The words were said a little carefully.
She sighed and reached for her Trust communicator. She gave Scott a long look and at last nodded.
“Capin. I’m sending in some Calvary. His name is Mentat….”
