Young Justice 2.0 – A World Without Justice 1.28

bb-avThe sun hung low in the sky in its last efforts to cook the two boys crouched beside a tree in a futile attempt to avoid the heat they were unaccustomed to. Garrett’s jaw was tight as his mind raced to try and solve the problem that threatened more than just the captured girls. To say this was outside of his knowledge base was a massive understatement.

The boy blue wiped his brow with the sleeve of reflective material and looked to his reluctant partner.”I don’t suppose you know how to storm an intelligent gorilla stronghold?”

Ishmael stood and thought for a moment. He was not a strategist or a tactician. All he knew he had pretty much learnt through osmosis and through Jackson Hyde. And Jackson Hyde had taught the boy manners.

“Couldn’t we just ask them if we could come in?”

“You ...

artemis-avSomewhere far above a dusty arena played host to a truly bizarre spectacle. An amphitheatre of ruins encircled a desolate ring of dirt. At the center a beast was squatting in a deep hole, still digging, and cast out the various bones he found which fell at the feet of the two great apes who stood and watched.

One of these apes, the larger of the two, sable black with a streak of silver on his crown, bent low and retrieved the bleached white skull of a silverback mountain gorilla.

“Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him well…” The line was cut short as a thundercrack rang through the air and the brute collapsed with a smoking, great hole between his temples.

Overlooking them on a raised pedestal King Grodd reclined in a vast throne of jagged stone...

redbird-avThe humid jungle air wavered not with heat, but with the arrival of the quintet of young heroes. Immediately as they’d materialized, Artemis and Redbird split apart to cover the flanks and Casey rose up into the air to act as a lookout. Though they hadn’t teleported directly into the thick of things in Gorilla City, the sounds of conflict and the smell of smoke carried over the damp air.

“I’m gonna pop up topside – see how close we are to the party,” Casey called down even as she ascended through the branches above them. The Blonde Bombshell broke through the canopy, revolving around to try and get their bearings in the sea of green.

Gorilla City – a technological wonder by any standards – was hidden from prying eyes by one of the most advanced cloaking systems in the world...

lantern-avScott had been flying around the Bronx and Manhattan stopping random crimes and scaring off looters where he could. He hadn’t heard from any of his friends for a while, so he decided to head back to the JSA headquarters.

On his way back to Morningside Heights and the JSA Brownstone, Scott swooped low over Harlem. He spotted a pair of what appeared to be gang members attacking an ATM with a crowbar. Sighing, Scott dove down and dropped a glowing green dome over the thieves.

“Guys, just because you don’t see a cop around doesn’t mean you can do stuff like this. He said as the dome constricted around the thieves.

One of the young men made a rude gesture in Teen Lantern’s direction. “Screw you, man. It’s more than cops not bein’ around. They ain’t anywhere...

requiem-avThe closer Robert grew to the Inner Sanctum, the more concerned he became. There was only one mind within, and it was filled with confusion and worry. Nonetheless, there was no malice in its emotional state, so he wasn’t afraid… just really ready for those answers. Pulling his hood fully over his head, he took a deep breath, slowly opened the door, and stepped inside. He was immediately surrounded by faces, but not people… pictures of everyone who had ever been a member of the Justice Society of America.

It was downright eerie. The room was huge, as he remembered, with a massive conference table capable of supporting the largest team of mystery men the world had ever known...

They were to use Boom Tubes. He knew this much. He did not much care what a Boom Tube was. He did not wish to. But the blonde girl had been nice. She hugged him and while he had been scared and uncomfortable he knew she had done it as an act of kindness. Which made him want to help her. She had lost someone too, he realised. They all had. And he realised that with Jackson Hyde and his friends gone perhaps lots more people had too.

He wore the clothing Jackson Hyde had given him. He was told it would help him swim better in water. He wouldn’t be able to swim fast like Jackson Hyde could but that was ok. And it had a special lining over his gills that meant he filtered air twice. Which was good.

But he wasn’t like them. He wasn’t a superhero...

pg2-av“Power.” Casey’s tone was curt. By now she was more than used to getting ‘the look’ from men of all ages. Sometimes it was flattering, sometimes disturbing. The jury was still out on Mr. Garrett. The look she gave Artemis and Redbird was skeptical at best. “You sure it’s a good idea to take Brainy Smurf here down to a fight between a bunch of over-sized apes?”

“Right now I’m not letting him out of my sight.” Redbird glared at Rett through the corner of her eye.”So yeah he’s coming.”

The boy didn’t even look at the crimson curmudgeon. “Jesus Christ, you’re charming.” He ran his fingers through his mussed hair. “Power Babe is right though, I am hardly the Gorilla fighting type. Hell, I am barely the lemur fighting type.”

Redbird gave a heavy sigh...

artemis-avGarrett had taken a chair at the table and was busying himself with the head that he had found, trying to find some way to open the perfectly sealed red plates. Artemis and Redbird stood at the monitor womb’s control panel.

The moment that alert went off, one question had been ringing in their collective heads. Who had sent it? Thanks to the work of their very very smart companion, they knew the League was gone, as was the JSA. Options were sorely limited, but between the rock and a hard place like they were, a call for help was a call for help. They had to answer it.

With the system unlocked thanks Garrett, the blonde would finally be able to. She opened the channel. “Watchtower to… anyone?” She said calmly. “We received the priority alert. Is anyone out there receiving?”

Redbird pa...

redbird-avRedbird’s arms folded across her chest. “We really don’t have time for this. We need to find out what happened to the League. There are probably about a thousand emergencies going on right now that we need to be handling and you all are sight seeing?”

“Probably?” Artemis was halfway through the trophy room when she looked back over her shoulder.”That’s a safe bet. But there’s no sense in going in half cocked.” She looked up at the pedestal bearing a glass case full of old skeleton keys. “We’re not going to solve this with half a quiver and belt of batarangs.”

“Yeah, cause Captain Cold’s gun is going to be so much more help.” Redbird grumbled. The Scarlet Squire wound through the collected trophies. “We don’t even know who else is out there.”

Aftemis stepped back from the display...

bb-av“Not so damn tight!” Redbird winced. “Are you wanting to keep me from breathing?”

Diana secured the flexicast’s lashes tight along the girl’s back. “Will it keep you from talking?”

Redbird smirked as she pulled her top back down, “Funny.” She looked down at the archer’s leg,”You need help with that?”

She stepped back, looking at her thigh. The bandage was soaked a deep crimson with her blood. A sigh fell from her lips, “Nah.” Despite what she said she still cringed a little as she pulled the adhesive loose. Even in the heat of the moment, Redbird had done an exceptional job of removing the arrowhead without exacerbating the damage. “It’s just a flesh wound.”

She sat down, carefully cleaning out wound...
