Young Justice 2.0 – A World Without Justice 1.8

pg2-avCasey tried the best she could to keep at a normal pace as she made her way through the pedestrian traffic around the subway station. It was hard for her to shake the feeling that something was wrong, and not in the “Mom’s off to foil the Ultrahumanite’s latest plot” kind of way. Reaching the brownstone that was the headquarters of the Justice Society, Casey took the full set of steps in one leap and was inside the building before she realized that she hadn’t needed to clear her entry with the security system.

Something was most definitely wrong. “Uncle Ted?” She called out, moving through the museum and into the working areas of the brownstone. “Tommy? Courtney?” The building was unusually quiet, giving way to more anxiety as Casey moved from room to room, but finding no one.

lantern-avScott Rayner hovered at the edge of space, scanning the Earth for any trace of his mother or grandfather as he waited for his dad to appear. Soon a faint green star winked into existence, then grew to a streaking emerald comet.

Waiting for his father to hit the atmosphere, Scott prepared to match his speed. But he wasn’t prepared for the sight of the Green Lantern vanishing as he hit the fringes of Earth’s atmosphere, a green contrail the only clue he had been there.

Having just witnesses a second parent vanish in the span of an hour, Scott began to freak out.”What the Hell?” he shouted, looking around. He quickly scanned the area around his father’s last position. While he didn’t find any trace of his father’s familiar energy signature, he did detect something else, something dark.

pg2-avThe Red-line rumbled along its route, those passengers not seated, swaying by the gentle rocking motion of the train. One such passenger, a tall, blonde teenager, stood in the center of the car. She had a backpack slung over one shoulder and she was clutching a hand-rail as her head bobbed to the music pouring out of her headphones.

“I am not / a pattern to be followed, the pill that I’m on is a tough one to swallow,” she sang to herself, oblivious to the looks she was receiving from those around her. “I’m not a criminal / not a role model, not a born leader I’m a tough act to swallow…”

“Casey.” A voice buzzed in her ear.

The blonde ignored the voice and kept singing...

lantern-avTranslucent green forms of Jenny Lynn-Hayden and Kyle Rayner stood in their kitchen, looking down at their son. “Tonight’s a school night. You know the rules.” the woman said.

The Green Lantern’s image nodded. “And have you even started on Of Mice and Men yet?”

Scott Rayner was stunned. His dad had been on Oa for the last week. How did he know about an assignment Scott hadn’t even told his mom about.

Reading her son’s expression, Jenny laughed. “Your dad and I were in high school too. It had to come up sooner or later this year.”

“Okay, fine.” Scott rolled his eyes. “I can’t fly to Star City. Can I at least do a movie group on the Z-Box tonight?”

“Sure,” the woman’s image said...

redbird-avThe whirl of the blades of the helicopter echoed over the roof of the plaza hotel as Artemis and Redbird busted through the access door.

The Teen Huntress nocked an arrow and fired it at the helicopter, embedding it right next to the doorway.

“You are persistent, little sister,” he yelled out over the whir of the blades. “But I don’t have time to play anymore, so I shall leave you with a gift.” He tossed a black oval a little smaller than a football toward the roof.

Redbird took off like a shot toward the object, baseball sliding to catch it before it landed. A red LED timer flashed through descending numbers. “It’s a bomb!”

“Correction, little bird,” several bodies poured out from the helicopter around the Dark Archer as he tossed two more across the rooftop, “Bombs.”

artemis-avThe air was always harder and colder the further you were from the ground. Several dozen stories up, it pushed hard against Artemis as she leaned over the edge, catching her hood and pushing it back. She hummed a little, looking down at the road below, counting the floors up along the outside of the Plaza Hotel. “Sixty four.”

She continued her counting along the 64th floor from window to window to window, that little idling tune turning into the Beatles’ classic When I’m 64. She reached back, catching the fletching from one of the arrows in the smaller section of her quiver. Her thumb felt the emboss nnock between the little faux feathers. She drew it.

“You know,” the breeze carried a rustling sound to her ear, “I know you bat-types love that sneaky sneaky stuff, but when you grow up w...

artemis-avThe magnum’s barrel flashed repeatedly with its violent bark disappearing into the silence of the open park. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, the sweat rolling down his cheek. The snap of a twig swung him about. “Back off!” Three more bursts of gunfire lit up his face. His breath, trying to choke down his the drumming in his ears and focus. “I know you’re there.” He tried to push that cool back to the surface. “Step out and I promise to make it quick.”

A soft echo of laughter caught his ears and he spun toward it. His finger squeezed for the trigger, but the whipping sound was faster as the metal arrowhead lodged into the barrel. The backfire was crippling, and he howled in pain, clutching his bent and bleeding fingers.

“Well, you kind did that to yourself...

redbird-av“I will tell you nothing!” The assassin screamed as he dangled upside down from a line hanging off the sixth floor fire escape of Gotham’s police headquarters. The rain pelted the helpless man, as he swung at the whims of the wind that blew threw the alley.

“From this height,” the girl wonder pulled the man close enough so that she could smell the stink of his coffee stained breath. Her voice was so low that it was almost inaudible against the sound of the rain hitting her hood. “I can promise you’ll break a leg at least. Now where is he?”

“You think you scare me, girl?” The man smiled with yellowing teeth. “You’re not the Bat.”

Redbird showed no emotion in her face, she just let go of the line.

The man screamed as he raced toward the pavement face first...
