Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.107

capvatarCapin watched as ‘Blindside’ jumped across to the next building and away. “So,” he said, turning back to Bluewolf, “It was a pleasure, but I too must be off. Have a date with an old lady.” Behind the his mask, Wolf was giving him an odd look. “Nothing like that. It’s, uh, a business meeting.”

Wolf nodded, giving Capin a smirk. “I’m sure it is.”

“We’ll do this again some time.”

“I’m sure we will.”

The cape hanging tight from his shoulders opened up as Capin took that step up onto the ledge. It spread wide behind him as he jumped across, never touching the ground. He landed soundlessly on the snow drifted rooftop and headed north, disappearing into the dark warehouse skyline.

Capin seemed to be making good time. He checked his watch as he dropped down to ground level...

artemis-avJack wasn’t bothered. He just wasn’t. He’d been playing the game a long time. The fact he was the only remaining member of the Royal Flush gang had taught him a thing or two about himself. Mainly that he was awesome. He’d robbed and fought and killed with the best of them. And now he was here: kicking back in jeans and T-shirt, looking like James Dean in his leather jacket, smoking a cigarette, inside an unlit armoury aboard an empty Watchtower. He was living the dream. Heroes were gone and he’d found himself in the favour of one of the most dangerously inspired geniuses on the planet. Even the itching of the synthetic eye behind his patch couldn’t get him down. Yes, it was a good day to be Jack.

Albert Desmond was not sharing in the feelings of relaxation...

redbird-avThe humming rose and fell, along with that strange, warm tickle that ran up the spine and out to the ends of every finger. Artemis flexed her fists open and closed when the room finished pixelating from the forest into the cool steel Watchtower transporter room.

The room was still. Quiet. They all realised this at once. Compared to the ominous hum of the jungle and the thinly veiled barbarism of Grodd’s Brute-opia it felt somewhat uneasy. They should have felt calm and peace. All that washed over them was unease. Each of them felt, in a unifying instant, a brewing sensation. Fate was percolating. A glance was exchanged between each of them.

“Home again home again…” Garrett said to break the quiet, stepping off the platform.

As the others followed him down, Redbird stayed put...

artemis-avArtemis pulled the comm from her belt and thumbed open a channel open to their teammates.”Tweet Tweet, Redbird. Sitrep.”

“I have good news and I have bad news,” Redbird’s voice crackled to life, “the good news is we have an ally.”

“Casey?” Artemis said hopefully.

“No,” the Girl Wonder said flatly. “One of the gorillas – the prince actually. He’s going to help us deactivate the gorilla bomb.”

“Gorilla bomb?” The archer’s brow rose and with it her eyes which looked at Rett. Her expression bordered somewhere between curiosity and concern. “Something tells me that’s not strapping a load of C-4 to a silverback and giving them the old heave ho out of an airplane.”

“Let me put it this way,” Redbird said sarcastically into the ear piece, “This thing goes off your bikini wax will cost the...

bb-avDiana kept close to the wall, crouching as she scurried along it’s cool steel plating. She was following the map in her head from the terminal. Left. Straight. Straight. Left. Right. Every so often she would glance back over her shoulder and check that the boy genius was still with her.

He stayed close, and smiled that almost goofy smile each time she looked at him from under her dark hood.

Artemis looked down. The bow felt good in her hands, reassuring. She flexed the arrow’s fletching against its string. It was like having her arm back. After this whole day she was itching to plant its steel tip in Grodd. Deep.

The archer heard footsteps ahead. She held up a fist, stopping them both. These halls were too bright for her tastes, not enough places to hide...

bb-avThe sun hung low in the sky in its last efforts to cook the two boys crouched beside a tree in a futile attempt to avoid the heat they were unaccustomed to. Garrett’s jaw was tight as his mind raced to try and solve the problem that threatened more than just the captured girls. To say this was outside of his knowledge base was a massive understatement.

The boy blue wiped his brow with the sleeve of reflective material and looked to his reluctant partner.”I don’t suppose you know how to storm an intelligent gorilla stronghold?”

Ishmael stood and thought for a moment. He was not a strategist or a tactician. All he knew he had pretty much learnt through osmosis and through Jackson Hyde. And Jackson Hyde had taught the boy manners.

“Couldn’t we just ask them if we could come in?”

“You ...

redbird-avThe humid jungle air wavered not with heat, but with the arrival of the quintet of young heroes. Immediately as they’d materialized, Artemis and Redbird split apart to cover the flanks and Casey rose up into the air to act as a lookout. Though they hadn’t teleported directly into the thick of things in Gorilla City, the sounds of conflict and the smell of smoke carried over the damp air.

“I’m gonna pop up topside – see how close we are to the party,” Casey called down even as she ascended through the branches above them. The Blonde Bombshell broke through the canopy, revolving around to try and get their bearings in the sea of green.

Gorilla City – a technological wonder by any standards – was hidden from prying eyes by one of the most advanced cloaking systems in the world...

pg2-av“Power.” Casey’s tone was curt. By now she was more than used to getting ‘the look’ from men of all ages. Sometimes it was flattering, sometimes disturbing. The jury was still out on Mr. Garrett. The look she gave Artemis and Redbird was skeptical at best. “You sure it’s a good idea to take Brainy Smurf here down to a fight between a bunch of over-sized apes?”

“Right now I’m not letting him out of my sight.” Redbird glared at Rett through the corner of her eye.”So yeah he’s coming.”

The boy didn’t even look at the crimson curmudgeon. “Jesus Christ, you’re charming.” He ran his fingers through his mussed hair. “Power Babe is right though, I am hardly the Gorilla fighting type. Hell, I am barely the lemur fighting type.”

Redbird gave a heavy sigh...

artemis-avGarrett had taken a chair at the table and was busying himself with the head that he had found, trying to find some way to open the perfectly sealed red plates. Artemis and Redbird stood at the monitor womb’s control panel.

The moment that alert went off, one question had been ringing in their collective heads. Who had sent it? Thanks to the work of their very very smart companion, they knew the League was gone, as was the JSA. Options were sorely limited, but between the rock and a hard place like they were, a call for help was a call for help. They had to answer it.

With the system unlocked thanks Garrett, the blonde would finally be able to. She opened the channel. “Watchtower to… anyone?” She said calmly. “We received the priority alert. Is anyone out there receiving?”

Redbird pa...

redbird-avRedbird’s arms folded across her chest. “We really don’t have time for this. We need to find out what happened to the League. There are probably about a thousand emergencies going on right now that we need to be handling and you all are sight seeing?”

“Probably?” Artemis was halfway through the trophy room when she looked back over her shoulder.”That’s a safe bet. But there’s no sense in going in half cocked.” She looked up at the pedestal bearing a glass case full of old skeleton keys. “We’re not going to solve this with half a quiver and belt of batarangs.”

“Yeah, cause Captain Cold’s gun is going to be so much more help.” Redbird grumbled. The Scarlet Squire wound through the collected trophies. “We don’t even know who else is out there.”

Aftemis stepped back from the display...
