Adventures in the ‘Verse – Through the Looking Glass 1.47

jack_av“…and so that’s the whole thing.” Tyler sighed as he, Copper, Jackson and Joe walked back up the dusty road to back to Alice.

“We sure we can trust him?” Joe said as he shifted the weight of the sacks of supplies he held in his arms.

The old preacher placed a hand on Joe’s shoulder. “I trust Warren, is that enough lad?”

The young electrician looked up at Copper. “Not really,” Joe smiled, “but it’ll do.”

“It’s gonna be tough to find.” Jackson said as they started to walk up Alice’s loading platform.”People have been looking for that since the end of the war with no success. It’ll be like finding a needle in a haystack, hidden in another haystack, hidden in a gorram world of hay. Hell, I doubt the damn thing didn’t get atomized when it crashed, or else the Alliance woulda found it by now.”

ty_av“Well this is a lovely place,” Jackson kicked a rock across the street.

“People gotta be buried somewhere,” Tyler shoved his hands in his pockets. “War took a toll on everyone Alliance and other. You know that as well as I do.”

“Yeah,” the mechanic nodded, “Just adds to the overall BWUAGGHHH,” he shuddered.

“They’re just shells son,” the preacher put his hand on Jackson’s shoulder, “their spirits are all in a much better place now.”

“That’s why we have you around preacher,” Ty chuckled, “You make us all feel better.”

“As much as I love this lively conversation,” Joe shook his head, “I need some parts and supplies if I’m gonna make sure Alice’s electrical system doesn’t go tits up on us, and that we keep food in our bellies.”

“Joo how rin,” Ty clapped the younger boy on the back, “Gotta kee...

dru_av“There she is…” Alice’s pilot banked as they entered the smaller planet’s orbit and took them around. From the black, Cherti, looked gray and desolate. It was fitting for a planet infamous for its graveyards. Despite acquiescing to Vanya’s request, neither of the Kokezaru brothers were terribly thrilled about visiting the so called “Ghost Planet”, and for that reason there was no discussion when Tyler took them on another leisurely orbit before turning them on their end for their approach.

As always, Vanya was there to watch the landing, the soft scent of citrus filling the cockpit around her. Delicate hands resting on Tyler’s shoulders, she didn’t say a word as her brother took his time easing Alice toward her eventual landing...

vay_av“Sorry it’s taken so long, baby,” Jackson’s hand rubbed the engine lovingly, “I promise it won’t be long before we’re back in the black.” The mechanic’s head slipped inside Alice’s engines. “I almost have it, Alice. I know it’s uncomfortable with me inside you but I’m almost done.”

A soft couch echoed behind him. “That’s not something you hear every day.” The companion’s full lips were pulled into a wry smile. “At least not from a man in the room alone.”

The voice made Jackson jump, his head slamming against the steel of Alice’s engine casing,”Gorram it!”

With a wince, the petite woman slowly made her way into the room. She set a fresh mug of coffee down on what looked to be a relatively safe, flat surface and peered around the engine to announce her presence in a less startling manner...

joe_avSince there was a limit to the places she was willing to clean — not because they were beneath her, but because of a respect for the privacy of others — Vanya found herself alone in the lounge with nothing else to occupy her thoughts. It was so much easier when she kept busy. No time for regrets or second thoughts. Just the happy distraction of light manual labor.

Deciding that some hot water for tea was at least somewhat productive, she moved into the kitchen section. Her brothers, of course, would want something stronger but there might be at least one or two others who would consent to joining her in a warm drink. She reached for the switch, noticing absently that she was in need of a good manicure, only to hear a dull click.

Frowning, the companion tried again. Another click...

dru_avThe crate sat in the hold. Even in all the excitement that had jostled around the whole of Alice’s crew, it hadn’t budged from where they had secured it. For Vanya and Mason, it was the first time they had laid eyes on it, but it wasn’t so long ago that the others had stood around it as they did now with the prickly wonder in their minds. That damn box. Pandora’s box…

“Bie woo long…” Dru groaned taking one hand from where it had been folded across his chest. He ran it through his beard. A large red gash ran across his brow from where his head had kissed the sharp edge of Alice’s engine block. He shook his head and looked over to Jackson. “How bad is bad?”

“Bad is an understatement,” sighed the grease monkey with the tenor of defeat...

ty_avThe dirty gray and brown ball that was Regina hung against the velvet curtain of the black. The ‘discussion’ had long since been settled, and Tyler sat on the bridge in silent dissent. The argument was a simple one and money had won out over morals. It wasn’t the first time time that had happened, and certainly wouldn’t be the last, but there was just something about this drop that didn’t sit right with him.

The soft chime of jewelry announcing her presence, Vanya let herself into the room without a word. Her delicate hand rested on the seatback for a fraction of a second before turning it to face her...

vay_avThe soft scent of citrus that infused most of her belongings had begun to permeate the room. Smiling wistfully as she drifted through her memories, Vanya paused in her unpacking as her hands rested on the rim of the leather chest before her. The ghost of a chuckle tugged at her perfect lips and, deciding the rest of her room could wait, quickly gathered up the parcels at the bottom of her chest then carried them out to the common room.

She couldn’t remember the details of the job–she’d paid less attention to the particulars back then–but she’d never forget her genuine pleasure at the opportunity to learn a bit more about the hill folk of Jiangyin. While her brothers had gone about their work, the diminutive companion had spent the afternoons with delightfully matronly woman.

ty_av“Preacher, you awake?” Ty’s voice crackled over the comm speaker. Copper, who had been dozing in the cockpit, jumped from his seat and grabbed the handset.

“I am now,” the old man growled. “Didn’t I tell you boys not to stay out late?”

“We’ll have plenty of time for penance later, Shepherd. Right now I need to you drop the ramp. We’re going to be comin’ in hot and jumpin’ star-side in a rush.”

“Any casualties?” Copper asked.

“None of our own. I expect a few on the other side of things is making peace with their dear and fluffy Lord right about now.” Ty said, his voice cut by the wind and the sound of a motor in the background.

“Well that’s good at least,” There was a bit of silence on the preacher’s side of the line.

“Everything alright home-side, padre?”

“We’re all good here...

dru_av“And will you be staying with us, sir?”

Tyler shook his head as he slipped the duster from his shoulders. “No, just dinner, if that’s okay?”

The concierge smiled, “No problem at all, sir. We have the finest chef in this quadrant. The dining hall is just through that archway. Any seat will do, we’re not that busy at the moment.”

“Thank you kindly,” Tyler nodded, palming the fellow a silver coin. He entered the hall, selecting a dimly lit two-top off to the side. He took a seat in the corner where he could take in the entire room and not have to worry about anything going on behind him. After a moment a petite serving girl approached and handed him a menu.

“Good evening, sir. My name is Chang Mai, and I will be at your disposal while you dine. May I interest you in a drink?”

Tyler scanned th...
