Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.68

kavatarBreakfast went well and the rest of the day was even better. Eddy never would’ve thought yesterday that today he’d be shopping for a spare toothbrush. After picking up that and a bag of disposable razors, they’d headed back to his place to pick up some clothes… a lot more than just the one set he’d need for emergencies and unexpected stays… no, he was going to “disappear” for a while. But that was for later.

Right now, it was almost 20:30 hours, and Kardiac’s appointment wouldn’t be kept waiting. So the conversation he was about to have was going to have to be kept short. He felt the heartbeat long before he heard the door to the roof open. “Alright, I’m here,” Andy said, his breath coming in clouds. “You could’ve picked a warmer place for a meeting.”

The vigilante kept his binoculars to h...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.64

Detective Andy Pope glared at his cell phone and contemplated crushing it with a free weight. That particular cell phone, a very expensive model in a very plain black case, was quickly becoming a harbinger of doom. A few hours before, it carried this message from his best friend and self-declared protector of Garrison City, Kardiac:

“Andy, if you’re there, pick up. Something’s happened… something bad. I need to talk… please call me as soon as you get this… business phone.”

Andy did not get the message until hours later. A raid had gone south. Someone tipped off Begnini’s soldiers and they had prepared a high-caliber welcome for them. One of his squad was in the hospital with a ricochet wound, but it could have been far, far worse.

So hearing Eddy call and leave a message like that was not ...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.63

fovatarDespite all the goings on last night, both good and bad, Vivian was up fairly early the next morning. This was likely due to the two cups she drank during and after Bluewolf’s visit. But, for whatever the reason Vivian was already up and dressed long before the alarm sounded. When it did, she shut it off quickly, not wanting to have it sounding off in Eddy’s slumbering ear. “Eddy, wake up.” she said softly, nudging him.

He rolled over and opened his eyes. He hadn’t gotten real sleep like that for a while, not comfortable, relaxed sleep… especially not the kind free of nightmares, so even those few hours had been restful. And he really didn’t want to get out of bed. He smiled up at Vivian. “Good morning, beautiful.” Then he promptly rolled back over and buried his face in the pillow.

She la...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.60

kavatarKardiac took a half step in front of Vivian. He wasn’t particularly worried for her safety, he caught the dry humor in Bluewolf’s voice, but given their conversation of a few minutes before, he didn’t want Vivian to try to jump in and defend him. He could feel her raising her arm to protest, so he reached around behind his back and took her by the hand. “We’d better get dressed then,” he said with a flat sarcasm, then quickly turned and pulled her back into the bedroom.

Vivian was indeed miffed about her territory invaded, not to mention whatever it was that Bluewolf had rudely interrupted. She let her hand be taken, but narrowed her eyes, her gaze flit to Kardiac and then back to Bluewolf...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.59

bwvatarSnow was falling again. Nothing heavy yet, but enough to make Bluewolf’s search of the eastern half of the city less enjoyable than it already was. One night to find Kardiac and the Fox, one night to convince them Silhouette’s plan might actually work. Hell, he wasn’t sure if he was convinced they could pull it off, but they weren’t left with very much room to maneuver.

Standard spiral search pattern, starting at the docks and traversing east through Hiland. South through Eastland, then cutting back west just north of the Garrison Heights area, and angling northwest back to the docks, rinse and repeat until you caught a solid trail or simply ran out of city. The latter would be bad, but he had the utmost confidence in his techno-gadgetry added with his natural abilities...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.58

fovatarVivian was used to getting telephone calls in the middle of the night. Her family was all on the west coast and had a habit of calling her at odd hours, so when the phone rang she thought nothing of it. In her sleepy state though she didn’t realize it wasn’t one of her phones ringing, but rather Eddy’s ‘work’ phone. It took her a moment to find the source of the annoying noise in the pile of scattered things on the floor beside her bed, but she finally found it and raised it to her face, “Hello?” she said in a groggy ‘you just woke me up and I can’t be bothered to hide it’ sounding voice. She was so not-awake at this point she didn’t even remember she wasn’t sleeping alone at the moment.

There was a rather lengthy pause at the other end of the line, and after a few seconds, she started to ...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.54

kavatarKardiac walked in, even though every ounce of common sense was telling him to leave. He let her go, knew she wasn’t going to run. Not this time. He saw the painting, center wall in her living room. Her painting, the one he’d changed…. this was pointless. Trust wasn’t earned, it was a gift… one he hadn’t been willing to give. So what if she knew now… it was the only thing he had left to give her. He reached into his bottom left hip pouch, heavily padded, and pulled out his glasses. He slipped them into his left gauntlet as she reentered the room. “Before we do this… before I go, will you answer one question for me?” he asked, still staring at the painting.

She set a medium-sized box down by the coffee table and looked up at him. “Of course...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.53

fovatarFox stumbled back a half step, right into the very same lawn chair they both had once before, ‘Damnit, I thought I moved those!’ “Wh.. What are you doing here?” she asked, too shocked to realize the obvious answer…to see her. Should she flee? Though, her stupid question made it rather tell tale that she hadn’t followed him here.

Kardiac looked at her for a minute, considered her words, and walked toward her. He kept his eyes locked on hers. There was a mix of curiosity and anger in his eyes. She backpedaled through the balcony furniture, Kardiac still approaching, until her back was to the balcony rail. “Lose the wig.”

It only took her a moment to get her edge back, “Lose the visor,” she shot back, her hands moving nowhere near her hair...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.52

kavatarThe afternoon had brought snow, and by evening it was starting to accumulate. It looked like the weathermen had been right for once, Winter was coming early. It made rooftop to rooftop travel a bit more treacherous, and the roads were terrible. Still, the motorcycle was back and the new electro-sensitive paint was dry. Right now it was a deep green with yellow EKG symbols on both sides of the gas tank.

Kardiac had been scouring the Eastland neighborhood all night with no success, so he decided to take his search to Hiland. He had sensed no less than five people alone on rooftops in the past three hours… none of them were her. Just people out in the brisk night air. So when he sensed his sixth rooftop wanderer, he wasn’t too hopeful.

He climbed the back side of the building, away from the s...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.47

kavatarIt hadn’t been a great night. Kardiac hadn’t gone to Vivian’s, despite her call… he didn’t want her to see him like this. Of course, now that he’d stood her up, there was probably little he could do to get her to forgive him. The thought had haunted him most of the night, and he got very little sleep.

The next morning, Eddy begged off his normal run with Andy. The detective interrogated the reasons out of him, hearing tales of silhouettes, blue wolves, and foxes. In fact, the only thing he left out was a little something about counterfeiting plates. He didn’t know why, but he had to make a decision how to proceed with those. Without the thief’s testimony, the case wouldn’t hold much water… even with Begnini’s fingerprints.

But even if she did testify, she wouldn’t live long after the trial...
