STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.45

arden_avThe first round of the Sabaac tournament had begun much as Trey had expected. A bracket was set up and players assigned to tables. Rules were announced by the ship’s pit boss and penalties for cheating were cheerfully pointed out by Agent Deffico.

Watching the other players at his table, the thief smiled broadly, the same smile he’d been telegraphing as a tell when he was bluffing. An executive with the CSA caught the smile and his eyebrow twitched, telling Trey the bait had been taken. It was time to exit the tournament.

Throwing away his highest card and collecting a zero, Trey pushed his entire stake into the middle of the table. “All of it,” he announced proudly.

The other players, save one, threw in their cards with mumbles of “Too high for me” or “I’m out”...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.43

bralor_avTrey and his escorts walked into one of the many restaurants on the pleasure boat’s promenade. They slid into one of the booths and waited. “Shouldn’t they be here by now?”

“Patience,” Trey nodded as he looked through the drink list, “I would figure you’d like being off your feet.”

“Didn’t say I didn’t appreciate that,” she grinned, “just worried about my baby is all.”

“No reason to be,” Arden jumped as Bralor’s voice came from the booth behind her. The little pilot started to whip around to the other booth. “Keep it in yer seat, squirt,” Bralor reprimanded her without even seeing her. It was like the old soldier had a second sense for these things. In fact it was just knowing your setting. Lots of polished glass meant lots of reflective surfaces “Act like you didn’t hear me...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.41

trey_avSien’avao watched “Xeran Agri” and his women walk away from the sabaac table before excusing herself. She walked away, several eyes traveling with her as she went.

As she walked into the hallway leading to the suites, she cast several glances over her shoulder, making sure she wasn’t followed. Lithely moving up the stairs, the slipped through the door of a small suite.

Gathered inside were four others. She walked over to the minibar and mixed a drink. “I made contact with Baron Agri. He’s something.” She slid a small disk across the low table to the boss.

The blue-green Nautolan tapped the disk and watched the hologram of “Agri” which sprang to life.”He’s not a Baron. His name’s not Agri. And, yes. I know he’s something. We… worked together for a while.”

A tall, dark-haired human snorted ...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.38

arden_avTrey marveled at the varied species and classes that populated the casino. Gambling establishments were one of the last great melting pots of the Empire. Where else could you find a mix of dirt farmers, scoundrels, politicos, CorSec executives, royalty and nobility from across the galaxy mixing freely, each eager to take the others’ money, and all ready to gleefully fork their credits over to the House.

Even the thieving last son of a fallen house, pretending to be something he isn’t fits in, he reflected. Of course, his gorgeous young pilot helped with the illusion. He looked at Arden and smiled. For his trouble he received an elbow in the ribs. “Time for you to play.”

“No it isn’t. The tournament doesn’t start for two more days.” the thief said with a frown.

Rolling her eyes, Arden gave...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.35

trey_avThe Soul was away, leaving Trey a twinge of regret as neither he nor his pilot were aboard. But the time for worry was past, and Vullif walked into the main boarding bay of the Linathi Princess a great smile breaking across his face. “Ah, my dear ladies! Have you ever seen a more dull entryway? I swear, father’s washroom has a more impressive flooring.” His shoes clicked against the Wayland marble tiles. “Come along, let’s find a porter to show us to our staterooms.”

“What the hell is the matter with you?” Arden said out of the corner of her mouth as she tottered on the heels. The diva taught her to walk on a flat surface in them but an incline was a different matter all together.

“It’s called a cover identity,” Trey whispered back...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.33

bralor_av“I think we can meet somewhere in the middle, Rai.” Bralor crossed his arms over his chest, looking down at the holovid. “I’m good for it. 780.” The old man groaned and appeared to slump back in a chair. The clone leaned on the console. “You owe me.”

The image of the older man scowled, and flickered with static as he shook his head. “Taking advantage of an old man, Bralor?”

“You’re still making money on this deal.”

“This is how you want to call in your marker?”

A grin split Bralor’s face. “I knew you’d come around.” He stood upright, stretching to his full height.”I’ll radio when we’re there.”

“How long?”

“Not too long,” he replied. “One stop and we’re on our way.”

The man nodded and the feed was cut...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.23

diva_avTrey walked into the lounge dressed in an outfit which made him look almost like nobility. The Soul had just set down in a docking bay in a better area of Nar Shaddaa and Trey had a plan in mind that, true to form, he hadn’t completely disclosed to his whole crew. “You guys know the deal. Hang out here ’til you hear from me, okay?”

Arden bit her lower lip for a second before she spoke, “Trey are you sure this is a good idea?”

“Sure I’m sure,” he said with a lopsided grin. “Diva and I can handle things. And we might pick up a little spare change along the way. Depends on who I bump into. There’s a few guys floating around this moon who still owe me.”

“And some that want your head up the business end of a bantha,” her eyebrow raised.

Trey leaned against the bulkhead and shook his head...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.22

kyra_avA shudder passed through the Soul as she entered hyperspace. Kyra sat on her bunk wondering just how she could have fallen in with a more dysfunctional crew, not to mention how they would be able to pull off Trey’s scheme. She lay back, trying to clear her head. Everything had moved so fast over the past week; the quiet of her cabin was a welcome retreat despite the open hostility she felt from the majority of the crew.

She recalled the techniques learned while at the dueling academy, pushing all thought from her mind and drawing her focus inward. There came a buzzing sound, a kind of rattling that seemed far away at first, but steadily grew in intensity. She opened her eyes to look around her cabin and the noise stopped.

She closed her eyes once more and drifted back into a trance...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.17

arden_avAs Trey left the lounge followed by Arden, Krynn looked at Aidenne and asked, “Relax..?” This was strange. The briefing had lasted less than ten minutes, and they were already told to relax. This was much different than what he was used to.

“Relax, Krynn. Take this time to do something enjoyable.” The Diva’s golden eyes were filled with a certain sense of resignation. “You’re not going to get more explicit orders here.”

Krynn looked dejected, and sighed. “Very well.” He looked around the room at the others sizing them up. “Perhaps you should tell me who these people are and what roles they service on the vessel?”

The doors to Trey’s quarters slid open, “Are you nuts?” Arden spat as the door shut behind her, “The six people on this ship versus a whole luxury cruiser filled with guards?” Sh...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.16

trey_avVullif sat on the bed, his head against the metal bulkhead, for some time after Bralor left his quarters. His eyes were closed and his breathing slow and regular, but the occasional twitch at the corner of his mouth or lift of an eyebrow belied something going on in his mind.

Eventually, his eyes opened and he moved to his desk, pushing the half-empty bottle aside. Picking up his personal datapad, he checked some news items, then checked through some other encrypted information he had on the device. Satisfied, he stood and pushed the metal chair under the desk, carrying the datapad with him as he pressed the intercom button next to his door.

“Hey, Arden. How long ’til we get to Durga’s interrogation?”

A voice tinged with static came back. “A couple hours. Why?”

With a smile, Trey clicked ...
