Hard Boiled – Episode Two: The Roof is on Fire 1.58

Blacksheep looked at the Predator gun drones hovering above the two heroes. She then looked at her – and she used this term loosely – partner, Lady Lash. Blacksheep thought that she was going to have a fair fight between them and the heroes below but obviously Kaja and her employer had other plans. Natalia did not like her one bit; you can blame it on Chechnya, but that wasn’t the reason. Natalia hated her because she knew how to push her buttons. “What’s the matter darling,” Lady Lash said watching the two heroes dodge for cover as the drones stalked them, “upset your precious Волк** isn’t here?” She watched with detached interest, as if viewing a tennis match.

“That does not concern you Kaja,” Blacksheep said her eyes never leaving the drones and their quarry, “what should con...

“You are not happy to see me, Natalia. Yes?”

Natalia “Blacksheep” Zbruevaia scowled. The shadow beside her set her skin itching. Little Tokyo’s thick air was made thicker by the distinct scent of stainless steel wetted with machine oil. She shook her head.

“You are an unnecessary complication. A distraction.” A receiver, tucked into the curl of her ear, whispered to her in Japanese. The Yakuza lookouts were signaling when the vans passed their checkpoints. Remote surveillance and motion sensors helped cover the rooftops. Too many of the city’s heroes preferred acting like second-storey men. Her men stayed within the warehouse, or hid upon the rooftops. Casual surveillance would reveal a Yakuza presence, not unusual in this area. Not a Russian contingent.

“You are angry about Chechnya...

Capin leaned his back against the cool cement of the Sandland Steel shipping warehouse. He winced as the weight of his body settled against at least one cracked rib, and he slipped his hand inside his coat. Not so far off the bedlam of sirens and news helicopters echoed an odd syncopation with his throbbing skull. It hurt to sigh, but he did it anyway.

“Are you alright?” As a medical doctor, Corin was rather versed in looking past a tough exterior that pretended it didn’t hurt. “I can take a look if-”

The Dapper Detective felt Enry tense up, tightening his support on Capin’s wounds. As the endorphins kicked in the adrenaline started pumping a little more. Enry was ready to hit somebody.”You have got to be joking.”

“What?” he replied, a bit taken aback...

The Sleepwalker crouched forty-feet above a roaring stream of nighttime traffic. Cars streaked below him like burning insects. Wind and rain rattled the traffic cameras under his feet. Water pattered against his black poncho as he watched the trucks that slowed to take the Murphy-Lindberg Highway Bridge to Garrison City’s industrial district.

A few days earlier, he’d been nursing his wounds after being chased down by three – THREE – unmanned Predator gun drones and one disturbingly attractive assassin of Eastern European descent with a penchant for chain whips.

“You named her?”

“Owww. Not so loud, Sil. How do you turn down the volume on this – oh, wait, here it is. Yeah, I did. What, you’ve got the name she gave you. It’s not like her M.O. is terribly common...

[Note: For continuity buffs, the following entries take place during the museum incident.]

The rooftop air vent beside his right hand erupted in a shower of metal as a barbed chain with a wicked scorpion-like tail ripped it open. The lash withdrew into the dark. A figure, lithe and dangerous, crouched on the roof’s edge.

“He said the drone would take care of you,” she said, accented voice a low purr. “I knew only personal touch would kill you. But, it never hurts to have help.”

Two drones rose behind the figure, angry black wasps with chain guns for stingers, and sighted him down.

The phone buzzed again. He sighed. You’ve reached Sleepwalker’s voice mail. I’m dying right now and can’t take your call… The Predator gun drones were in a good position...

*The following takes place during the museum fracas.*

“Oh, I know you pretty well. As for pet names, you can call me Silhouette, and I’m here to help…”

Sleepwalker reflected on the rather fluid definition of the word ‘help’ as a Predator unmanned gun drone tailed him through the alleyways behind Mainline’s brownstones. It deftly avoided the maze of clotheslines and fire escapes. The tiny VTOL engines hissed and hummed like window mounted air conditions in desperate need of a clean filter. The nose turret chuffed softly when it spat bullets at him.

Over the noise of the city, the average resident would never notice someone being hunted by a very expensive toy. At least I ticked off a quality group of people. Nothing but the best in modern technology to kill me.

Silhouette did help earlier ...

Hard Boiled – Episode Two: The Roof is on Fire 1.18

The punching bag in the GCPD gym groaned and shuddered as Andy’s fists slammed it into the concrete. Two punches carved a deep welt into the beaten leather. The duct tape around the bag frayed and tore under the assault. He spun on his heel and kicked. His heel slammed onto the old leather. Dust flew into the air, catching on the morning sun. The bag jumped off its mooring chain and flew across the room. It smacked into the concrete wall with a dull thud.

“Crap.” Andy grabbed the fallen bag and hefted it up. It weighed as much as a person, if that person had a diet of lead weights, but he managed. Chains rattled and the bag returned to its proper place. Andy focused himself and threw another volley of punches into the already wounded bag.

“Ouch. What did that bag ever do to you?”

Andy t...

“Well… didn’t expect you to be the one giving me a visit…”

“It’s not supposed to be me,” Kardiac said as he stepped out of the shadows. “Blue’s usually the one that organizes the parties.”

Sleepwalker shed his mask, turning back into Andy Pope, albeit a bit strangely dressed. “So… does this mean I’m getting keys to the clubhouse?”

“The vote was three in favor, one opposed. You should get the official ‘call’ from Blue in the next day or two.” Kardiac turned to look through the dirty window in the shed’s east wall. “It’s been… busy.”

“So I’ve seen,” Andy said, still looking at the Kardiac despite the others resistance to eye-contact.”Do I need to ask who voted ‘against’?”

“Do you?”

Andy sighed, finally turning away...

I should be asleep right now. he thought. I should be unconscious and dreaming like every other normal person in the world, quietly waiting for the alarm to hit.

Seven men, dressed in drab green security uniforms, faces covered by gas masks, armed with stainless steel batons, circled him. He spun his nightsticks into a defensive stance and waited. No one twitched or flinched. Everyone moved with purpose and waited for just the right moment to begin.

But, no, here I am with the world’s largest case of insomnia and an urge to tackle Eastern European mercenaries in the middle of a faux office building filled with illegally modified weapons and ammunition.

One of the seven turned his foot. The high squeal of rubber against tile cracked the silence...

So much for a quiet night.

It should have stopped with Montel. Bust the dealer, torch his traveling stock, and abuse his backdoor access to the GCPD’s database for follow-u. Being sidelined after the coma had one benefit – unfettered access to the network’s back end. Andy couldn’t participate in the major crimes unit raids for ‘health’ reasons; so he rode shotgun via the computer and surveillance system.

But it never stops. Montel’s home base was hidden behind several fronts, including his actual home. It took most of the night to track down where his cache was hidden. Luckily, Andy didn’t need much in the way of sleep. Not since he got a lungful of experimental drug precursor in the raid. After that, and a small coma, his system worked in overdrive...
