Hard Boiled – Episode Two: The Roof is on Fire 1.3

“Brothas and sistas, Montel’s gun emporium is now open for business.” The back of the Ford Expedition opened. Row upon row of heavily modified handguns gleamed in the sodium streetlights dotting the industrial parks in Garrison City. This close to the Lourdes, the buildings held smokeless industry – body shops, storage areas and the like.

Perfect for an enterprising gun dealer’s purposes; close enough to the customers and empty enough for a demonstration. No one in the office parks worked at night.

Montel pulled a weapon from the rack. His clients reached for their own guns, tucked away in their waistbands. The M-67 gang took their name from an Ecuadoran death squad trained by the CIA in the 80’s. They took the death squad part very seriously.

“This is the latest and greatest in high-po...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.98

fovatarFox began to spray the foam Bluewolf had given her, coating the area around her and Andy. The icy feeling in her gut dissipated somewhat now that he was alert. A feeling of panic and dread had come over her when she saw Andy just lying there surrounded in blood and dead mobster brain matter.

With Andy breathing on the respirator now she started to drag him out of the building.

“It’s a good thing you’re not one of those half a dozen a day donut cops.” she said to Andy with her signature smirk as she hefted him up to his feet, walking out.

Andy was too weak from smoke inhalation to put up much of a fight, his throat and lungs burning from the hot gases put out by the fire.

“I thought…” he mumbled.

“…that I was one of the bad guys. Yeah. Me too. Confusing isn’t it?”

She ran out of fire fighti...

“Up on that ladder they say
How high?
Does a brother have to climb
To touch the light…”
-Afghan Whigs, “Honkey’s Ladder”

Light and heat.

Light and heat and…time?

Time. All the time in the world. He had all the time in the world, compressed into a fraction of a second. Time to see it all again.

Let’s go to the replay on that…

Panicelli raised his hands. Andy dropped his foot but kept the night stick tip against the mobster as he unslung his cuffs. “You have the right to remain silent. Everything you say—”

The scene slowed. Time crawled like a sloth after fifteen Guinness and triple-shot of Jameson’s 75 year reserve as a chaser. He watched the bullet part the glass beside him. Spiderweb cracks rippled from the impact point. The glass tumbled away in slow motion...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.94

bwvatarPope’s team was scattered all over the warehouse. Wolf had been too late to stop O’Shea, but he’d be damned if he were going to let anyone else die tonight. The humanitarian bit was going to be complicated, Silhouette had reminded him that the cops had a vague description of ‘a guy in armor’ from the activities at the yacht club, and they were already on the trigger happy side. Wolf didn’t want to play the Spider-Man role, but he couldn’t let himself be taken in for questioning either. There was just too much at stake at higher levels.

The chemical fires were spreading faster than he could move; meaning the situation was going from worse to FUBAR. Unnatural colors and intense heat blazed as he swept about the area, snatching cop and criminal alike and depositing them at a safe distance...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.92

bwvatarA two-pronged raid. One element to cover Begnini’s estate, the other, Pope’s team, hitting Begnini’s factory facilities at the docks. There were no traces of Deadeye near the drug lord’s home, he’d been able to canvass the area thoroughly but quickly. That left the docks. With Kardiac ‘out of the way’ the only threat Begnini had to worry about was Detective Pope, one of the few honest cops in the city. That means Pope is O’Shea’s main target.

Bluewolf was able to arrive just as Pope’s team went in. He scanned the area with IR, a large knot of red, orange, and yellow accompanied with the sounds of automatic weapons fire signified the raid was in full force...

“Hammer One – All clear.”

“Hammer Two – We’re ready here.”

“Hammer Three – It’s business as usual here. We’re ready to go.”

“Hammer Four…”

Andy sighed. The new KenTech communications systems were crystal clear. All the field units reported in, one after another. Seven in all; a felicitous number. Six all clear signals so far. But something didn’t feel right. There were no false alarms, nothing. Just the normal runners wandering in and out of the drug factories they’d be striking. Business as usual.

And that made him worry.

“Ready for the all clear?” said Angela, taking one last look through the surveillance van’s monitors.

“Almost. Just want to…wait… There. Monitor three.” He punched up the camera watching the warehouse/drug factor’s rear...

capvatarDetective Pope fished the keys out of his pocket, fingering out the one for the car as he crossed the lot. He stifled a yawn, lining the key into its slot. He pulled it open and slid in behind the wheel.

“You look like a Norelco ad.”

Any trace of weariness was gone in a flash and the gun was in Andy’s hand before he could think, thumbing back the hammer. The black cowled face leaned forward in the back seat letting the bit of orange light from outside run over him. Below his slight white toothed grin was the outlining hint of a black bowtie.

“Norelco ad?” His thumb clicked the gun into a less dangerous position, but he kept the barrel level.

“Yeah. The ‘before’ part.” The man in the back continued his grin.

“Well, some of us were too busy working to get into our formalwear...

Dammit, Eddy. You promised me you wouldn’t get dead. Now…

Andy stared at the surveillance photos from last night…and his cell phone. The phrase “The cellular user you are trying to reach is no longer in service…” became a hateful thing. The photos didn’t help. Kennedy and the boys on primary surveillance were watching Begnini’s little party at the Yacht club. No sound – damn white noise generators – and the video feed was poor. But, it was at least something.

The video feed going down announced Kardiac’s appearance. By the time the team switched to the 35mm cameras, Fox had entered the building. Then the other one, the armored one, barged in.

The quality of the photos was very rough. But it told a story. Flickers of a fight inside...

Second Floor Meeting Room

“Sit down and shut up, Fostern,” said Commissioner Patrick R. Troy. Andy said and did nothing as Fostern choked down his protests and accusations. “You’re lucky I’m not in here with a filleting knife ready to give your miserable hide to the families of three good police officers.”

The Commissioner turned to Captain Castillo, Angela and Andy. The three sat at one end of the table. The detectives flanked their captain. As always, Castillo was as readable as a granite statue.

“But, Sir,” sputtered Fostern.

“But nothing, Fostern,” said the Commissioner. He threw down a series of files. “Those men are alive only because Pope and Sheldahl told the ER team at the medical center what kind of chemical burns to expect...

Hard Boiled – Episode One: A New Day 1.68

kavatarBreakfast went well and the rest of the day was even better. Eddy never would’ve thought yesterday that today he’d be shopping for a spare toothbrush. After picking up that and a bag of disposable razors, they’d headed back to his place to pick up some clothes… a lot more than just the one set he’d need for emergencies and unexpected stays… no, he was going to “disappear” for a while. But that was for later.

Right now, it was almost 20:30 hours, and Kardiac’s appointment wouldn’t be kept waiting. So the conversation he was about to have was going to have to be kept short. He felt the heartbeat long before he heard the door to the roof open. “Alright, I’m here,” Andy said, his breath coming in clouds. “You could’ve picked a warmer place for a meeting.”

The vigilante kept his binoculars to h...
