STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.49

trey_av…And you couldn’t have told us the plan?” Arden popped open one of the safety deposit boxes, “I thought we were a team?”

Trey glanced over his shoulder as he worked the lock of another strong box. “I’m sorry. But the arrest had to look real. Plus, I didn’t want to make a deal out of calling in my Pop.”

“Who you stunned and left in the cell.” She pulled the cred sticks out of the box.

“Yeah, well,” the thief said as he pulled a gem-laden necklace from the box. “You didn’t see what he did to me for my twelfth birthday on Chandrilla. No court would convict me.” He paused, then let out a laugh. “Well, not for that anyway.”

“You really worry me sometimes,” she gave him a side ways glance, “you know that right.”

Tossing the necklace to his pilot, Trey grinned. “Nothing to worry about, Arden...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.48

arden_avKyra leaned into the blade, forcing it down through the thick steel of the vault door. It was tough going, since the lightfoil didn’t have the same intensity of a Jedi lightsaber. Still, things were moving along faster than if they were trying to slice the combination. A safe the likes of the one they were cracking was bound to have a fail-safe on the number of times the wrong sequence of numbers could be entered before fusing itself shut. Oddly enough, the manufacturers didn’t seem as concerned with forced entry attempts.

The auburn haired apprentice wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her gloved hand. They’d all changed into more ‘work appropriate’ attire. “Wonder if there’s any way to tweak this thing?” She remarked absently.

“Don’t. Like I said, it’s a family heirloom...

diva_av“Alright, Glee’k.” Bralor stood in the corner of the Diva’s suite with Chiss. After the vague news from Trey there was perhaps a little bit of regrouping to be done. After all a team effort may have just turned into a solo mission. “We don’t worry about what Trey is playing at. Too late in the game for for change ups. Whether Kyra shows up to do the job or not, you do the job. And we meet back up as planned.”

“Understood.” Krynn nodded. “I will proceed as instructed in the plans.”

“Don’t try and carry for both of you if you end up solo. You take the most and easiest to carry, Cash. Jewels. Goods. Whatever.” It was like giving the old mission briefing back in the army, except this time they weren’t flying in on a short range transport under fire by droid army tanks...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.45

arden_avThe first round of the Sabaac tournament had begun much as Trey had expected. A bracket was set up and players assigned to tables. Rules were announced by the ship’s pit boss and penalties for cheating were cheerfully pointed out by Agent Deffico.

Watching the other players at his table, the thief smiled broadly, the same smile he’d been telegraphing as a tell when he was bluffing. An executive with the CSA caught the smile and his eyebrow twitched, telling Trey the bait had been taken. It was time to exit the tournament.

Throwing away his highest card and collecting a zero, Trey pushed his entire stake into the middle of the table. “All of it,” he announced proudly.

The other players, save one, threw in their cards with mumbles of “Too high for me” or “I’m out”...

nik_avNik had definitely had better days. He had awakened to find a technician in his escape pod pulling out a control board to scavenge a junction link. His sudden squeal of annoyance had startled the maintenance man, but had also given away his position… which meant he’d probably need to find a new place to sleep to avoid security sweeps. Less than an hour later, he had a run in with a smuggler by the name of Jenks, who he’d done a couple of ‘procurement’ tasks for in the past.

Jenks considered himself a man of tastes, which is why he chose the Princess as a meeting place for so many of his exchanges...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.43

bralor_avTrey and his escorts walked into one of the many restaurants on the pleasure boat’s promenade. They slid into one of the booths and waited. “Shouldn’t they be here by now?”

“Patience,” Trey nodded as he looked through the drink list, “I would figure you’d like being off your feet.”

“Didn’t say I didn’t appreciate that,” she grinned, “just worried about my baby is all.”

“No reason to be,” Arden jumped as Bralor’s voice came from the booth behind her. The little pilot started to whip around to the other booth. “Keep it in yer seat, squirt,” Bralor reprimanded her without even seeing her. It was like the old soldier had a second sense for these things. In fact it was just knowing your setting. Lots of polished glass meant lots of reflective surfaces “Act like you didn’t hear me...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.40

tiila_avThe breathtaking monotony of space suddenly gave way as the Passion’s Flame approached the luxury liner. The massive ship loomed large through the transparasteel viewport, dwarfing the yacht as they drew closer to the hangar bay. Aidenne’s hand rested lightly on Bralor’s shoulder as he maneuvered the ship toward their destination. The vibrations of the engine shifted then faded away as the primary engines were shut down, leaving the Flame to coast into the wide open bay.

Glancing down at her hand, the Diva’s lips curled into a small smile. For a moment her mottled skin took on a blue tint as they passed through the doorway with room to spare...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.39

bralor_avBralor pushed back from the controls, letting the unlocked chair swing out and around. Everything was set. He had made contact with the cruise ship and they had accepted their request for docking. It would be a few short moments before they would board and join the rest of their band of thieves who were already in place. Then the challenge would begin, and they would see just how reckless they were, taking a ragtag group of novices on such a large job. As he stood, he did his best to forget how short they were on luck of late, and how much they would no doubt require.

The Soul would take care of itself for a few. It was prepped just to reach orbit and hold position so Bralor could bring it in all the way by hand. But first there were things to be done. Important things.

He ducked through t...

tiila_avWell?” Bralor walked side by side with Rai Kitt down the plank to where The Soul was parked. Kitt was a gruff old man with a wild gray stubble that made Bralor’s five o’clock shadow seem manicured. The embery end of his cigarra clamped between his teeth gave a thick embery glow as he took a long puff on it. The smoke that curled up over his face, wavered slightly as he took the stub from his mouth and used it as a pointer. “Damn good job if you ask me. Way more than the price I let you sucker me in to.”

Aside from the make and model and mild modifications of the YT-2000 freighter, The Free Flying Soul was nearly unrecognizable with its new orange accents. Bralor wasn’t sure what Arden would say when she saw it, but it was part of the plan...

STAR WARS: GALACTIC TALES – BETWEEN THE EMPIRE AND THE REBELLION 1.33

bralor_av“I think we can meet somewhere in the middle, Rai.” Bralor crossed his arms over his chest, looking down at the holovid. “I’m good for it. 780.” The old man groaned and appeared to slump back in a chair. The clone leaned on the console. “You owe me.”

The image of the older man scowled, and flickered with static as he shook his head. “Taking advantage of an old man, Bralor?”

“You’re still making money on this deal.”

“This is how you want to call in your marker?”

A grin split Bralor’s face. “I knew you’d come around.” He stood upright, stretching to his full height.”I’ll radio when we’re there.”

“How long?”

“Not too long,” he replied. “One stop and we’re on our way.”

The man nodded and the feed was cut...
