Hard Boiled – Episode Three: The Long Road Home 1.3

It was early. It was not that Jotaro wasn’t an early riser. He typically conducted his exercise routine before dawn. He was, however, unaccustomed to conducting business at such an early hour. His gleaming black town car rolled to a smooth stop and after a moment, his driver opened the door to let him out. Jotaro stepped onto the curb, craning his neck up the many stories of the KenTech building he had been summoned to by his superior Keisuke Kanda. Kanda-san had been very abrupt on the phone, offering no details, only that he was to arrive as early as possible.

Jotaro found himself mildly impressed with the décor once inside the building. Modern lines and a mixture of steel, glass, and rich woods all complemented one another in a rather pleasing aesthetic style...

“That was a whole lot better than last time,” Jamie said as she and Corin walked out of the shadows of his apartment, “I felt like I was going to see my own lungs after the first time.”

“Yeah it’s normally not like that. Though to be honest, I’ve only traveled with up to three people before tonight, and I don’t know if I wanna ever try eight again,” Corin said as he flopped himself onto the couch, his head fell onto the back of the couch his fedora slipped off of his head and onto the floor.

“So what do you think of Dawn?”

“Come again?” Corin said as he pulled his head up to look at her.

“For my codename. I figured since I’m now the champion of Ra might as well have a cool name.”

“And you picked Dawn?”

“Yeah,” she said as she gave him a sideways glance, “so?”

“It’s a might, Tony Orl...

It was early when Kardiac closed and locked the skylight above his Lexington Wells’ apartment. He crossed the room, picked up the glasses from his coffee table, and swapped them for the goggles he’d been wearing. Pulling off his gauntlet and gloves, he flopped down on his sofa and reached over to press the button on his answering machine.

Two new messages. As the first message began to play, he heard a woman’s voice… one he hadn’t heard in a very long time. “Eddy…? It’s Deanna. I hope this is still your number… I know we haven’t really talked in a couple of years, but I… well, we need to. We need to talk soon.” He sat up from his slouch, eyes narrowing.

“Look… I’ll understand if you don’t get back to me, but it’s important… and it took a lot of convincing for me to make this call...

Hanging from the end of her rope, she dropped off onto the rooftop. Reaching up, she grabbed her swing-line and with a flick of the wrist, unhooked it and spun it back into a tight loop. Of all the rooftops in Garrison City, this was the one to which she thought she would never return. She brushed the red hair that she wore out of her face, tucking it behind a black ear-tip, and walked over to the edge.

Silently, she looked over the edge of the building and remembered. She had been six stories down when she caught him. Carrying him back up, clutching her onto for dear life, had not been easy. Of course, what happened afterwards had been one of the hardest things she’d ever done. She had let him become her world, he’d even changed her in many ways, and it had all come crashing down.

“Oh Edd...

Riordan was finally getting his calm back. Marco was still seething but he was quiet, which Riordan appreciated. Dominic and the entity within him was still smiling and had begun singing the alphabet song.

“You forgot the G.” Riordan smiled.

“Ah yes.” The entity laughed, “G…how could I have forgotten?” He laughed again.

“What is this accomplishing?” Marco sighed.

“He is browsing through Dominic’s memories, he’s learning.”

“I paid you good money to help my son, not to watch some monster rape his mind!” The mobster shouted getting enraged again.

“He’s not…how can I explain this…He’s merely reading his mind, like a book; he’s not harming it in any way.”

“I’ve had enough! What is inside my son?” The older man screamed.

“He is an elemental...

Capin looked over the throng that stood before him. He was tired. He was sore. He was just short of beaten. But then again just short is still anything but beaten. Kardiac’s appearance had given him enough of a breather to put himself back together for his next wind. And there was no way in hell he’d let any of them get inside for the big show.

“Oh come on!” He tossed back another of Ak-Fet Sur’s dogs, taking down two more in the tackle.”How many of you can there possibly be?” Capin had reeled Enry back inside, to conserve its energy, and started taking them on hand-to-hand and man to dog. He couldn’t remember a time he’d felt his partner so weak...

“…safe?”

“What the hell?! Jamie was right here what happened?”

“Jamie?” Kaye called out but didn’t get an answer, “We need to split up and see if we can…”

“Kaye, I think I found where she went,” Vixen said as she stood next to the staircase leading back up to the house, light was shining down from the doorway above.

“Damn,” the two raced back up the staircase.

“Looks like the boys had fun,” Vivian said as she lightly kicked one of the unconscious cultists.

“Yeah but none of them opened the door,” she said sniffing the air, “none of their scents came close to it, the only people I smell on it is Aaron, Ryu, and Jamie.”

“But she couldn’t have opened that on her own.”

Kaye switched on her comlink, “Capin you there, where are you guys?”

Little busy at the moment, Kaye could hear sounds of ...

She sent a loud thought out, trying to get Scott’s attention. It didn’t take long and the download less — including the fact that Eddy had shown up.

“About fracking time…” she muttered.

She snuck in through a basement window, sticking to the shadows. Hearing sounds of a battle above, she pulled out a small unit to track the best way to get to said battle. Jesus. It was time to leave him a message. After all, it’s always friendly to call an old friend after returning home from a long absence. He had acquired the pen on his way back into Garrison. Now, all he needed was the paper.

Gloria Martinez held on to the envelope in her hand as if it carried the wealth of a Nation. For two days, she’d waited outside of that ticket office, and it had paid off. In a less than two week’s time, she’d be front-row for the first Allison Lance concert in six years, since the pop star decided to retire and raise a family.

She adjusted the way her backpack hugged her shoulders as she turned a corner. She hadn’t paid nearly as much attention to how she’d packed her belongings this time. After all, she’d been rushed...
